MANDATORY CONTINUING EDUCATION FOR ALL PARALEGALS/LEGAL ASSISTANTS
(pursuant to Business & Professions Code sections 6450, et seq.)

All paralegals shall be required to certify completion every two years of four hours of mandatory continuing legal education in legal ethics. All continuing legal education courses shall meet the requirements of Section 6070. Every two years, all paralegals shall be required to certify completion of four hours of mandatory continuing education in either general law or in a specialized area of law. Certification of these continuing education requirements shall be made with the paralegal’s supervising attorney. The paralegal shall be responsible for keeping a record of the paralegal’s certifications.

Paralegals must complete four (4) hours of general law or in a specialized area as of December 31, 2010. The next certification period in this area is January 1, 2009 - December 31, 2010.

Four (4) hours continuing education in legal ethics must be completed by December 31, 2010.

CONTINUING EDUCATION REQUIREMENT FOR CERTIFIED LEGAL ASSISTANTS

To maintain Certified Legal Assistant status, legal assistants must submit proof of participation in a minimum of 50 hours of continuing legal education programs or individual study programs. Credit is also awarded for significant achievement in the area of continuing legal assistant education such as successful completion of a state certification test, completion of a CLA Specialty examination, or teaching in a legal assistant program. CONTINUING EDUCATION REQUIREMENT FOR CALIFORNIA ADVANCED SPECIALISTS

California Advanced Specialists are required to maintain their advanced specialty certification status by submitting proof of continuing education to NALA in addition to the CLA requirements.  Twenty (20) hours of continuing legal education are required of California Advanced Specialists every five years.  At least 10 hours must be in the specialty area of California certification and the remaining credit must be in subject areas relevant to the work of legal assistants. Santa Barbara Business College Paralegal Studies - Ventura and Online Campuses
